In Our Own Backyard: Laury’s Bakery in Oak Park, IL

2 Oct

For our second adventure, we traveled to Laury’s Bakery in Oak Park, IL.  It’s a great, small, neighborhood bakery tucked casually away in a strip.  To be upfront: you should check it out.  Donuts are only the tip of the iceberg here; they had really delicious-looking danishes, layer cakes, cupcakes…you get the idea.

But here’s what we checked out…

Donut #1: Vanilla Frosted Coconut

Coffee Girl:

This donut was a pleasing, small shape.  The cake of the it was sweet and light.  I enjoyed how the frosting was slathered on, without being too sweet.  The coconut seemed fresh and added just the right balance of coconut taste to the sweet white frosting taste.  Overall, it was a very pleasing donut.  I’d give it a “B+.”

Donut Boy:

If I would add anything, it would be that the coconut shavings added a very nice texture to the smooth frosting.

Donut #2: Chocolate Frosted Cake

Donut Boy:

Overall, I’m a big fan of the double-chocolate donut.  Right off the bat, this donut stepped up to the plate with some high-quality chocolate flavor.  A bit darker than perhaps I would have preferred; I tend to go for more milk-chocolatey stuff.  The most pleasant part of this donut was a complete surprise: the light, almost fluffy texture of the interior.  The outside of this donut had a distinct crunch.  Added bonus: the donut was lighter than I expected.

Donut #3: Caramel Frosted with Peanut Butter Chips

Coffee Girl:

This was a surprise Academy Award-winner for me.  I was completely taken off guard by the buttery taste of the light, almost pastry-like raised donut.  The thin layer of hardened, caramel frosting studded with small peanut butter chips was stunning.  I could not get this donut out of my mind.  I can’t wait to go back.

Donut Boy:

I only had a bite of this donut and I, too, noticed the buttery flavor immediately.  This donut was top notch.  Snuck up on me and ended up being my favorite donut of the morning, too.  If you go to Laury’s and get one donut, get this donut.

Donut #4: Boston Kreme

Donut Boy:

Just like the double-chocolate, I go for Boston Kremes frequently.  This donut was heavy.  Holding it in your hand, you could feel its heft.  The cream inside was sweet and glossy (as it totally should be).  The great thing about getting a quality donut like this is that even the more basic, less-flashy parts of the donut are great: the dough was rich with slight hints of vanilla, coupling awesomely with the chocolate frosting and cream.  Great version of a classic.

Donut #5: Vanilla Frosted Butter Crunch

Coffee Girl:

This was an excellent donut, overshadowed in today’s outing, however, by other, more stellar entries (see Donut #3).  A solid “B,” however.

Donut Boy:

I concur.  It’s a little unfair to hold up other donuts to that Caramel Donut (see above).

So far, our experiences would suggest that when you seek out smaller, local shops, you’re going to be happy with what you find.  If you’re in the area, Laury’s is definitely worth checking out.

Until next Saturday, valiant civilians!
