Returning to a South Side Staple: Dat Donut

14 Jan

As we enter this new Donut Year, we find ourselves glancing backwards through our past journeys for inspiration.  Upon further reflection, we realize we have not yet scored some tried-and-true Donut Meccas.

You see, Dear Readers, scattered around the South Side of Chicago lie some of the best donut shops in the city.  In fact, they’re quite likely some of the best donut shops in the greater Chicagoland area, if not the entire Midwest (here at Breakfast Adventures we’re not afraid to make drastic Donut Statements).  Old Fashioned Donut, Abundance Bakery, and Dat Donut are a few to name.

It was the third of these we decided to return to this morning and re-evaluate.

Dat Donut from outside: It don't look like much.

Dat Donut, also sometimes called Dat Old Fashioned Donut, is known on a national level for delivering good, fried, down-and-dirty donuts.  We visited them once before but returned this morning to examine their offerings more critically and assign them a ranking.

Dimples Donuts: A Donut Destination in Batavia

5 Nov

Donuteers, do not be afraid of a bit of a drive.  If there’s one lesson we took away from this morning, it’s that truly good donuts are indeed worth trekking around for.  What place taught us this valuable lesson?

Dimples Donuts in Batavia, IL (which is really not that bad of a drive if you’re heading out early in the morning, prime Pastry Hours) is such a place.  We’ve seen Dimples’ name on the Internet many times, but had shied away from actually checking it out because the drive was a bit daunting.

Boy, are we glad we finally worked up the courage to get in the Donut Mobile and drive!  This place really knows their donuts.

Here’s what we found:

County Donuts in Schaumburg: Part 2

8 Aug

It was a busy weekend, Dear Readers, for donut- and non-donut-related reasons.  Whereas normally we strive to bring a Fresh Report every Saturday morning, the events of the last 72 hours forced a delay-of-game.

Nevertheless, on this Monday morning we are happy to bring you Part 2 of our visit to County Donuts in Schaumburg, IL.

Two weeks ago, we visited County Donuts for the first time and were blown away.  We realized immediately that County Donut’s plethora of donut options warranted a two-part entry.  This past Saturday, we returned and tried several kinds we hadn’t had before.

Here’s what we found:

Dunkin’ Donuts: A thorough look at the corporate giant

23 Apr

Dunkin’ Donuts is everywhere.  Like it or not, that much is undeniably true.  We here at Breakfast Adventures are often thwarted by it — it invades our Google searches for “donuts in Chicago” and taunts us every few blocks when we venture into the city.  Nevertheless, we felt it was our Breakfast Duty to thoroughly examine this corporate giant for the benefit of Pastry Eaters everywhere.

Over the past few months, we have been slowly compiling an entry on this Donut Juggernaut.  Dutifully, we have sampled a donut or two each Saturday, recording our observations and waiting until we had enough data to present a comprehensive report.  The entry below consists of these Taste Trials.

Here’s what we found:

Wall-to-Wall Bliss in Palatine, IL: Spunky Dunkers

2 Apr

Saved in the “bookmarks” section of our Internet browser is a folder simply called “Donuts.”  It contains links to many donut shops in the area that we’ve looked up and have yet to visit.  Slowly and surely, we are making our way through this list.  It’s a delicious voyage.

This morning, we came to Spunky Dunkers in Palatine, IL.  While a bit of a drive if you live in Chicago, we were nevertheless very excited to check it out.  Their website is well-put-together and does a good job of showing off their menu.  Their slogan, too, is exactly the kind of phrase that would draw Donuteers like ourselves to them.  They claim their shop is “the place where you feel like you’ve died and gone to Donut Heaven.”  Do tell!

A Lil’ Taste of Texas Flavor: Highland Donuts

26 Mar

It is not often we here at Breakfast Adventures get a chance to do some research outside of Chicago.  But recently, Donut Boy traveled to Austin, Texas for SXSW, the annual music conference.  While there, he happened upon a charming local donut shop on the outskirts of Austin called Highland Donuts.  When he had a few minutes one morning, he stopped by to grab a few donuts and check it out.

Here’s what he found:

Valentine’s Day at Dunkin’ Donuts: Good idea, but…

12 Feb

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and Dunkin’ Donuts is well aware: The national donut giant recently rolled out four new flavors for the season, in hopes that an earnest romantic might buy his/her valentine a box of these pastries as a gift.

We take V-Day pretty seriously, and so we felt it was our duty as Dedicated Donuteers and Holiday Enthusiasts to sample these four new flavors and give you the scoop.  We’d hate for anyone to give a bad donut as a gift.

Here’s what we found:

Donut #1: Cupid’s Cocoa w/ Jelly Filling

Coffee Girl: Very nice for a franchise!  The combination of chocolate cake, chocolate frosting and raspberry jelly filling is very successful, even when none of the individual ingredients achieves maximum freshness or lack of preservatives.  Show up with a couple of these for your sweetie and you’ll definitely score Valentine’s Day points.

Donut Boy: Yeah, it’s important to cut Dunkin’ Donuts a little slack: This is a tasty donut, to be sure.  My largest complaint would be with the lackluster dough, which really just serves as an envelope to hold the jelly and support some nice frosting.  Pleasing overall, though. Continue reading
