Kay’s Bakery: Returning to an Old Favorite

17 Dec

This morning found us at a bakery we’ve been to several times before (officially and unofficially), Kay’s Bakery in Forest Park.  It’s an unassuming local bakery that serves up some seriously delicious donuts.

We first visited Kay’s almost exactly a year ago, and we loved it then.  Since that time, however, we have decided to begin scoring our Donut Haunts, in an effort to objectively rank them (see here).  So we knew we had to return in order to give Kay’s the marks it deserves.

Here’s what we found:

2010: The Year in Donuts

1 Jan

It’s been a great year.

Since we started in September, we’ve had many adventures in the Donut Mobile, driving around on our Pastry Expeditions.  Click here for a full list of the places we’ve checked out. We’ve had a blast digging into donuts from all over the place.

Naturally, as the year draws to a close, we have become reflective.  Pensive, even.

What we present to you now are highlights from our travels thus far, for better or worse.  It’s time to honor the places of Pastry Greatness (and warn you about places of Questionable Quality).

Phenomenal Frosting in Forest Park: Kay’s Bakery

18 Dec

We’ve been aware of Kay’s Bakery for a long time, given its nearby location in neighboring Forest Park (again, we cannot reveal the exact location of Donut HQ).  From the outside, it projects an aura of simplicity and a sense of history.

When you step inside, you recognize the marks of a legitimate bakery.  As the above picture shows, Kay’s offers all sorts of tasty treats.  But, c’mon now.  You know we’re here for the donuts.

With that in mind…

Tackling a Legend: Krispy Kreme Pt. 1

27 Nov

To our dismay, the Krispy Kreme store in our neck of the woods closed down a few years ago (thanks for nothing, Atkins Diet!).  Coffee Girl, herself a longtime advocate of Krispy Kremes, worried she would never again be able to connect to the glorious glaze.  Donut Boy, having not had one since boyhood, could only fuzzily recall how they tasted.

Imagine our excitement, then, when we discovered that a Krispy Kreme store lay waiting in nearby Elk Grove.  After charting a course on Yahoo Maps, we hopped in the Donut Mobile and made haste to this hallowed ground.

Here is what we found:

Oak Park Bakery: About friggin’ time

23 Oct

Seeing as we hail from/around Oak Park (our exact headquarter’s location can never be revealed), you would think we would have gotten around to visiting The Oak Park Bakery a little bit sooner.  For some reason, though, it took us a little while.

Well, we finally got our act together and payed this local institution a visit.  It was hopping on a Saturday morning, but the friendly staff moved things along quickly.  We were accompanied on this morning’s mission by Guest Donuteer, Dame Danish.  Here’s what the three of us uncovered:
